History
Violet Crown Garden Club was organized in 1924 at the instigation
of Clara Driscoll Sevier. Dr. Dalton Richardson proposed the mane,
ìViolet Crownî, in accord with O. Henryís
frequent reference to Austin as the ìcityî with the
Violet Crowned Hillsî
Beginning in 1946, Violet Crown voted unanimously to consider plans
for a homeîand in 1948, dedicated their U.S.Government Bond as
a basis for a building fund. Similar interested had grown with the
expansion of other garden clubs, and a developing close relationship
with the Parks and Recreation Department. The result was the
organization in 1955 of Austin Area Garden Council with Violet Crown
a charter member and providing the first AAGC president. Violet Crown
hosted conventions, held plant sales, and conducted tours and
eventually raised $15,236.14 which was presented to AAGC in February,
1964.
Violet Crown was instrumental in saving, refurbishing and landscaping
the French Legation. They undertook the landscaping and planting
around the main entrance and the chapel of the Austin State Hospital.
